Banksy

Banksy is the alias of an anonymous England based graffiti artist, political activist, street artist, painter, and film director.  He creates satirical street art and graffiti by using a stenciling technique.  His work, which is mostly based on political and social criticism has been on streets, walls, bridges, and museums around the world.  Banksy is known for mocking the government (mainly British and U.S.) because they label graffiti as vandalism.  He displays his art on public spaces and sometimes builds physical pieces to display his message.  Banksy does not sell photos or art pieces himself, but auctioneers sometimes attempt to sell his street art on location.  The problem of removing it is left with the highest bidder. I chose to write about Banksy because I find his work to be humorous and think it is interesting how he confronts social and political issues.  I also think it's intriguing how he has been able to hide his identity for the life of his career.

This article gives a brief biography about Banksy and explains how he got into the graffiti scene.  There is also a small photo gallery where you can browse some of his work.

This is Banksy's website.  It has an interview with him, shows his inside/outside works, and allows you to download some of his pieces.

This is the film by Banksy titled Exit Through the Gift Shop.  The film was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature at the 83rd Academy Awards.
